Answers to frequently asked questions
What does working in a nuclear project involve?
For employers, working in a nuclear project means resourcing teams that can operate within a highly regulated delivery environment, where every decision is shaped by safety case requirements and oversight from the Office for Nuclear Regulation. Day to day, this involves planning and scheduling work against strict quality and safety gates, managing risks and issues with a much lower tolerance for error than in conventional sectors, and engaging stakeholders including regulators, client organisations and local communities. Roles span engineering, project controls, commercial and quality functions, all of which need staff who understand how their work fits into the wider project lifecycle and safety culture of the sector.
How is a nuclear project different from a conventional project?
Nuclear projects sit under significantly stricter regulatory oversight than most conventional projects, with every stage subject to safety case scrutiny and independent assurance from the Office for Nuclear Regulation. Life cycles tend to be longer, with more rigorous stage gate approvals, and risk management carries higher consequence given the potential impact of errors. Personnel working on regulated activities must often meet SQEP, Suitably Qualified and Experienced Person, standards, which most other sectors do not require. Stakeholder engagement is also broader, extending beyond the client to regulators, government bodies and local communities, meaning transparency and evidence based reporting matter more than in typical conventional delivery.
Can we pick just one or two modules?
Absolutely. The programme is designed to be fully modular – choose any combination of modules that suits your team’s development needs.
